The Upper East Regional Tourism Authority wants to promote the Upper East Region as a year-round vacation destination. In order to successfully design, package, and market the region’s food, dance, festival, as well as many other local products and cultural relics, it would collaborate with the chiefs and residents of the Upper East Region.

The Upper East Regional Manager for the Ghana Tourism Authority, Wisdom Ahadzi said this when he spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

Using himself as an example, Mr. Ahadzi recounted that while stationed in the southern part of the country, he had an aversion to Tuo-Zaafi, a traditional northern meal from corn or millet flour. However, when he was prompted to try the dish in Bolgatanga, he realised it was a tasty dish.

To this end, the Regional Manager explained that if such traditional meals are properly packaged and marketed, they could draw the country’s attention to the Upper East Region.

“When we are talking about culture, food is also part. I said to people that in the south, before I came here, Tuo Zaafi, as I know it, I didn’t want to even see it. When I got here, I was convinced to taste Tuo Zaafi and I said ah, this is not something we are aware of. Then I started talking to people, how can we package Tuo Zaafi to be special.”

“There are so many of these foods that they mention. I wake up and look at the people of Bolga and it is like people are energetic. What is it? I am having a feeling that it is the food they eat that gives them that much energy. So how do we promote this?” he said.

Additionally, the GTA is working to build profiles of all regional tourist sites. Once this is completed, it would help the Authority restructure the tourist centres and allow them to be attractive to tourists.

“It is about taking the attraction one after the other. Let’s say Paga, it is an issue of going to Paga with the media to cover it. We will also check whether it is up to the level where people would visit. If not, what is not there? What is lacking? What should we do? That is what we are looking at.”

Mr. Ahadzi called on the media to partner with the GTA to promote the Upper East Region.
