The Upper East Regional President of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GHABA), Rebecca Golo, has rejected claims that hairdressers are illiterate or school dropouts, describing such perceptions as “wrong and misleading.”

Speaking at a graduation ceremony for 39 hairdressing apprentices in Bolgatanga, Golo said the profession requires skill, knowledge, and training.

“People say we’re school dropouts and that we do this work because we’re illiterate. That’s not true,” she said. “Each of us has a God-given talent, and we have chosen to be hairdressers. I am an SHS graduate, and others have diplomas and degrees. We are not illiterates.”

Golo stressed that hairdressing demands careful attention to detail, particularly in handling chemicals and hair products.

“Our work is like a doctor’s work — one mistake can damage someone’s hair,” she said. “We must read and understand instructions carefully.”

She added that hairdressers play an important role in society by enhancing women’s appearance and confidence.

The association graduated the apprentices, who were trained by 14 instructors in the municipality. Some of the graduates also rejected stereotypes about the profession and cautioned against labeling hairdressers as dropouts.
