Scores of people from all walks of life showed up to donate blood at this year’s blood donation exercise held in Bolgatanga on Saturday February 13.

Save a Life Foundation in partnership with the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital organized the 6th edition of the annual blood donation exercise to provide the blood bank of the hospital and its peripheral health facilities with enough pints of blood.

The blood donation exercise was prelude to this year’s Valentine day’s celebration to stock the blood bank at the hospital and hence augment the long aged issue of a shortfall in availability of blood.

The annual exercise which was supported by telecommunication giants, MTN, saw hundreds of people troop to the Ramsey sports stadium in the Regional capital to donate their blood to save lives.

In an interview with a1radioonline.com, organizers of the exercise mentioned that it has been realised that the blood bank of the Regional hospital most of the time lose lots of blood considering peoples attitude towards donating blood when their relatives needs a transfusion.

“You know how people behave when they have to donate for their relatives when they need blood. They always give excuses that if they give blood they will lose the energy they can invest on their farms. They therefore leave them to depend solely on the little blood the hospital has hence making the blood bank empty.”

They mentioned that this exercise provided the platform for everybody including individuals who have phobias for hospitals to come out to donate blood.

They advised that blood donation was a way of showing ones love for mankind and that people should do away with certain superstitious believes and come out during donation exercises to give out blood.

A donor who spoke to a1radioonline.com under anonymity said he was impressed with the initiative adding that the organizers should rather organise the exercise as a biannual event because blood is life.

He noted that donating blood was a way to show love to others in the month of love. He advised that people should make donating blood a part of them because one may not know when he/she or relative may need blood.
