71 people have been confirmed dead in yesterday’s fatal accident that occurred about 2km away from the Kintampo Water Falls in the Brong Ahafo region.

Officials say the death toll has increased swiftly in less than 24 hours after the accident occurred though frantic efforts are still being made to save lives.

State owned Metro Mass Bus believed to be bound for Tamale collided head-on with a cargo truck that was carting tomatoes from the northern part of the country to the south. Police say the bus was driven on faulty brakes and that could possibly be a cause of the gory accident.

Medical Director at the Kintampo Municipal Hospital Dr. Bismark Owusu Fosu told Azongo Albert the hospital is overwhelmed with patients and therefore some have been transferred to other hospitals outside the region including the Okomfo Anokyi Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi taking in some patients.

“We had to transfer some of the injured to other hospitals like Wenchi hospital, Okomfo Anokyi Teaching Hospital and even Tamale Teaching hospital for treatment. Six of the patients were flown to these places with a helicopter that was made available by government,” he said.

He added that 68 people died at the Kintampo hospital while 3 died at the Techiman hospital clinching the death toll to 71.

According to him, family members mostly from the north of the country are trooping to the facility to identify bodies of their relations who they feared were involved in the accident.

“The body identification exercise would continue until the bodies are completely cleared,” he added.

A government delegation comprising of Ministers of State and leadership of security agencies have since visited the accident scene and victims on admission at the Kintampo hospital.

Some families in the upper east region are grieving over the death of relations and friends who were involved in the accident.
