The Upper East Regional Police MTTD under the leadership of the regional police commander, DCOP Simon Yao Afeku has started a continues exercise to check road worthiness of vehicles that ply roads in the region after the gory accident that claimed more than 70 lives two weeks in the country.

Speaking to a1radioonline.com during the exercise, DCOP Afeku said the activities being carried out by the police on our roads, is not in any way meant to scare road users but to ensure reduction in road accidents and as well maintain discipline on the roads.

The exercise which took place on the Bolga-Tamale road was to check worn out tires, faulty brakes, road worthiness, driver’s license and other possible faults that can lead to accident.

The exercise took road users unaware which led to the arrest of some motorbikes and cars for various road offences and were immediately processed for court.

DCOP Simon Afeku, described the carnage on roads in the region as improper and hence the decision to wage a war against recalcitrant drivers who do not obey simple road traffic regulations. He also used the opportunity to ask the general public especially road users to compliment whatever work the police does.

According to the commander, it is the duty of every passenger to report any driver engaged in over speeding, overloading, reckless driving and drunk-driving among others that risk lives of passengers and other road users.
However, the commander stressed that speed detectors and interference is a big challenge to them.
According to him, some known personalities in the region who should have known better, would always come to the offenders rescue.

But DCOP Afeku said he will no longer tolerate such acts from anyone irrespective of their positions because a life lost can never be replaced
