One of the 700 young African leaders selected to take part in the prestigious 2023 edition of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is Gifty Atampugbire, a committed public health nurse from the University of Ghana Medical Center.

This prestigious fellowship, initiated by the United States of America, recognizes Madam Atampugbire’s exceptional commitment to community service and her contributions as a public health nurse in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region.

Having served in the Bolgatanga Municipality before relocating to Accra, Gifty Atampugbire has been actively engaging with local communities and market centres on various health-related issues.

Notably, she led a team of nurses during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic to conduct community sensitization programs. With a mask on her face and a megaphone in hand, Madam Atampugbire visited popular community centres, chief palaces, Tindanmas, market centres, and schools to educate people about the spread of the virus, preventive measures to safeguard themselves and their families, and the importance of eliminating stigmatisation against infected individuals.

Her tireless efforts in raising awareness and promoting public health have earned her this remarkable opportunity to participate in the Mandela Washington Fellowship. As one of the 100 Fellows selected to stay and work at institutions aligned with their professional goals, Atampugbire will embark on a six-week leadership institute at Syracuse University in New York, followed by four weeks of Professional Development Experience at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission in Texas.

Gifty Atampugbire’s selection not only reflects her personal achievements but also highlights the impact that dedicated healthcare professionals can make in their communities. The Mandela Washington Fellowship not only provides her with a transformative experience but also fosters long-term engagement between the United States and Africa. By equipping young African leaders like Atampugbire with the necessary skills and knowledge, the fellowship contributes to the collective efforts to bring positive change and sustainable development to the continent.
