FIFA referee Dawood Widrago has called on residents in the Upper East region to boycott elections until the sporting facilities in the region are given a facelift.

Sporting facilities in the Upper East Region are in a depressing state and this has over the years played an influential role in preventing teams and other sports men and women from being able to churn out the best in them.

With the current FIFA licensing system, clubs are expected to play on grassed pitches and this therefore puts teams in the Upper East Region in a dire position because they risk getting their home venue changed because the region lacks grassed pitches.

Speaking to A1 Radio’s Humul Khulsum Tahiru on sports line, the FIFA badge referee, Dawood Widrago said the people of Upper East must sit up and stand to demand for their rights which have been denied them for a very long time.

According to him, there is the existence sports fund in the Municipal Assembly’s budget which is expected to be used in developing sporting facilities but that has always not been the case in the Upper East Region. He challenged previous MCE’S and the current MCE to come openly to refute his claims or come out to account for what they have used the monies for over the years.

“There is supposed to be a sports fund in the Assembly’s budget. The MCE should come and prove me wrong. Over the years we have not seen what this fund has been used for. There is the need for these individuals to tell us what those monies have been used for.”

“The MP’S and DCE’s must sit up. They say they are developing and the district Assemblies are developing but what do we see? Nothing,” he said.

He indicated that the people of the Upper East have been taken for a ride for a very long time and that it was time they make people who come to canvas for their votes accountable to them because that was the only way the region could develop.

He mentioned that there was the need to organize a regional demonstration to press home the need for improvement in sporting facilities in the region.
