The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, has accepted an invitation to lead the mediation of the protracted conflict between the Mamprusi and Kusaasi in the Bawku area. This is according to the Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu. He said this when he spoke to Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show.

“The government is doing a lot about the Bawku issue. The Asantehene is in and is trying to see how we can resolve this matter amicably,” he said.

Additionally, security has been beefed up in the Bawku area to manage rising tensions. Mr. Yakubu explained that the government is bent on returning the Bawku community to the once vibrant economic hub it was.

“We have special forces there in Bawku. If I say forces, I mean both the police and the military. We want to bring Bawku back to where it was,” he said.

The Upper East Regional Minister called on all stakeholders to play their individual roles to ensure that the conflict is resolved as quickly as possible.

“The issue is about all of us. Can we forgive each other? Can we put our guns down and sit down and talk? These have been the issues all the time. Everybody seems to be very tired about Bawku, but the government is not tired. I am not tired. We are trying to resolve the matter,” he added.
