The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), William Nlanjerbor Jalulah, has stressed the need for responsible and professional reporting on conflict-related matters.

Speaking at the launch of the 2nd Upper East Regional GJA Awards in Bolgatanga, Mr. Jalulah urged journalists to exercise caution and verify information thoroughly before reporting on conflicts.

In his speech, he said, “I urge you all to be professional in reporting conflict and conflict related issues. If we must report on any conflict, let us cross check our information very well.”

Highlighting the importance of journalistic integrity, Jalulah further cautioned against rushing to break news related to conflicts within the region.

He stated, “I want to caution that we should not rush to report every information about suspected activities of violent extremists.”

Instead, the chairman advised journalists to prioritise the safety of the public and collaborate with security agencies.

He suggested, “Rather, let us alert the security agencies of any suspicious activities of these people for them to take action. If not, when we rush to report on such activities, persons behind such activities will strategize and perhaps, relocate and succeed in carrying out their evil acts.”

The upcoming 2nd Upper East Regional GJA Awards competition, scheduled for 6th October 2023, will revolve around the theme “Safeguarding the Peace and Security of The Upper East Region: The Role of The Media.”

He called on members to know that as journalists, adhering to these principles will ensure that accurate and verified information is disseminated, playing a crucial role in maintaining peace and security in the region.
