The Black Princesses of Ghana have finally qualified for the 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after eliminating the Senegalese national team on Sunday, 21 January 2024.
Ghana’s U20 women’s team handed defeat to their rivals, 5-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium in the final qualifying round second leg, securing a 7-1 win on aggregate.
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, set to take place in Colombia later this year, will feature the Black Princesses for a record seventh time.
In the first leg, the Black Princesses triumphed with a 2-0 victory in Dakar, but did not come into the return leg at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium as an easy side.
Just four minutes into the game, Senegal proved to be a stubborn side by shocking the hosts with the opening goal but was quickly responded to by star Maafia Nyame, who drew Yussif Basigi’s side level in the 18th minute.
Beline Nyarko extended Ghana’s lead in the 23rd minute, giving the home side a 2-1 advantage before halftime.
After the recess, the Black Princesses maintained their impressive performance with goals from Tracey Twum, who scored from the penalty spot in the 67th minute.
Nyarkoh struck from inside the box after 72 minutes to register a brace, giving Ghana a 4-1 lead.
Maafia Nyame and Helen Alormenu’s one-two play on the flanks found Salamatu Abdulai, who came in as a substitute to bury the fifth goal in the 78th minute.
Ghana will join Nigeria, Morocco, and Cameroon as Africa’s contingent for the tournament.
The 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup will run from 21 August to 22 September 2024 in Colombia.
