Negative tags affecting women participation in politics – CENSODEV

The Centre for Social Mobilization and Sustainable Development (CENSODEV), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has expressed worry over the negative tags given to women participating in active politics.

These tags deter other women from participating in politics and contributing their quota to national development.

The Executive Director of CENSODEV, Mr. Braima Sanjage, speaking to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, May 16, 2024, explained that it was unfair for women, who make up a majority of the country’s population, to not be able to participate actively in taking national decisions because of social constructs.

“There is a perception that women who participate actively in politics and in processes of leadership, we brand them as prostitutes. We also describe them as stubborn, arrogant, and all that. This makes our political setting very male-dominated. Because of this domination, women are suppressed,” he said.

To help deal with the situation, the Centre for Social Mobilization and Sustainable Development (CENSODEV), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has launched its project in the Upper East Region to canvas for higher participation of women and other marginalized groups in the upcoming December 7 general elections.

CENSODEV is an NGO operating in the Upper East, Upper West, North East, Bono East, and Western regions that has envisioned a socially cohesive society where communities mobilize themselves, plan solutions, and sustainably build resilience for the future, addressing poverty and illiteracy collectively and transparently.

The Executive Director of CENSODEV, Mr. Braima Sanjage, says women have the intellectual abilities to occupy positions and make useful decisions for the collective benefit of society, hence his outfit’s move to whip up women’s interest in elections and election-related activities.
