Pandy Bobby, the celebrated “Acholic” hitmaker, has shed light on why many artists in the region are hesitant to host shows. According to Pandy, local fans’ spending habits significantly influence this reluctance.
“The truth of the matter is that people in Bolgatanga are not used to paying for shows, especially when it’s their own. They would rather spend more than GHC 1,000 on you when it’s an album launch than pay GHC 10 for a show,” Pandy Bobby explained. His remarks highlight a key issue for local artists who struggle to monetize their performances due to this cultural preference.
Pandy’s comments came in response to a Facebook post by Seidu Sulemana, popularly known as Phatbone the 5 Star General, the Drive Time host on A1 Radio. Phatbone questioned why artists in the region are not emulating the successful strategies of their peers in Northern Ghana, where paid shows are more common.
The discussion, however, sparked a broader conversation about the support local artists receive from their communities. Pandy’s insight reveals a critical economic barrier that affects the ability of artists to sustain their careers through live performances. While album launches seem to attract substantial financial support, the reluctance to pay for regular shows creates a challenging environment for regular gigging.
