In a bid to improve reading skills among basic school pupils, the Bolgatanga Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has organized a reading festival. The event, held in Bolgatanga recently, brought together pupils from various basic schools in the municipality.
The festival aimed to improve literacy skills and promote a culture of reading among pupils.
The Public Relations Officer for GES in the Bolgatanga municipality, Fredrick Agunga-Dongo Ayine, said the reading festival is a response to the need to boost reading skills among pupils.
According to Mr. Ayine, in order to train learners to read frequently at the basic level, the reading festival is one of the initiatives that should be embraced.
“The reading festival has become important because, for some time now, surveys indicate that our learners are not able to read fluently by the time they reach basic 2. So with this data that we gathered, we took steps to make sure that we remedy the situation, and part of it is to organize the reading festival.”
“This reading festival took place at the school level and has gone to the circuit level. We are now at the municipal level to have a team for the municipality that will be competing with other districts.”
The event was graced by the Municipal Chief Executive, Rex Asanga, who emphasized the importance of reading in the development of children and the growth of society.
According to Mr. Asanga, the Reading Festival was met with enthusiasm by pupils and teachers alike, who expressed gratitude for the initiative.
