Angry protesters in Sherigu a suburb of Bolgatanga on Thursday turned away trucks carrying waste to a dumping site in the area, insisting under no circumstances would they allow waste collection vehicles assess to the area.
The angry demonstrators burnt lorry tires and some of them wielded placards some of which read: “no hospital no refuse damping site” and “what is good for the goose is also good for the gander”.
Speaking to the Assembly Member of the area who doubles as the leader of the demonstrators, Gandaa Mathias Asokiyine he said they felt marginalized when it comes to developmental projects in the region and they do not think that the only thing they deserved was a refuse dumping site.
“Initially when we heard that the hospital was going to be built we offered them land but were later informed that Wikogo which is part of the Tongo district has been chosen as a suitable place for the referral hospital.- Gandaa to A1 News
“I think the referral hospital should be cited in Sherigu, on the basis that, when you look at the region all the developmental projects are cited in the north part leaving us with nothing.
“Again, our children and animals always contract diseases which are due to the presence of the refuse dump so if there is anything like that then, it shouldn’t by pass us.”
The Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Edward Ayiriba Ayagle visited the scene and upon sighting him; the demonstrators blocked and surrounded his car, preventing him from going to the chief’s palace. They also burnt lorry tires in his presence to register their grievances.
The MCE in addressing the demonstrators assured them that he would have a meeting with the Regional Minster to see the way forward but urged them to exercise restrain and allow waste collection vehicles assess to the dumping site whiles they try to address their grievances.
