Residents of the Sabon Zongo Community in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region are voicing serious concerns over the placement of a transformer they believe poses a significant risk to their safety.
The transformer is situated in a narrow space frequently used by children traveling to and from school, making it impossible to fence the area for added protection.
In an interview with A1 Radio, community members revealed they have lodged numerous complaints with various authorities, including the contractor, requesting the transformer’s relocation. However, their appeals have been ignored.
Saeed Jafar, the community’s lead petitioner, recalled a tragic incident where a young man from the regional chief imam’s house was electrocuted by a falling high-tension wire while relocating a canopy.
“This tragic event has heightened our fears of a similar occurrence with the new transformer,” said Mr. Saeed.
Mr. Saeed also mentioned that the community had approached Mr. Sakora of Budik Electricals, the contractor responsible for the installation, but was told that nothing could be done about the situation.
Eric Boahen, the area manager of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), responded to the concerns, noting that his office had not yet received an official complaint from the residents.
“We are yet to receive any official complaint from the residents,” Boahen stated during a phone interview.
In the meantime, Mr. Saeed indicated that the community plans to formally petition the relevant authorities in the coming days to address their concerns and seek a resolution.
