Sustainable agriculture plays a key role in dealing with climate change issues. This is according to Yunus Abdulai, the Country Lead for Feed the Future Ghana Policy Link Activity.
Mr. Abdulai underscored the pivotal role of sustainable agricultural practices during a public lecture organised by the Upper East Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in collaboration with Feed the Future Ghana Policy Link.
The lecture, which was held in Bolgatanga on Thursday, July 11, 2024, aimed at improving journalists’ knowledge in the area of climate change.
Mr. Abdulai emphasised how significantly climate change affects the daily activities of all Ghanaians. “Climate change is an important aspect of our lives today, particularly in the agriculture sector,” he said.
Mr. Abdulai outlined his organisation’s commitment to enhancing inclusivity, evidence-based decision-making, and transparency in agricultural processes. According to him, since the organisation’s inception in 2022, Feed the Future Ghana Policy Link has actively supported Ghanaian policy stakeholders, including government bodies, private enterprises, civil society organisations, media outlets, and smallholder farmers.
He further emphasised the organisation’s strategic focus on the northern regions of Ghana – Upper East, Upper West, North East, and Northern regions.
Despite policies being national in scope, Feed the Future Ghana Policy Link prioritises localised support and engagement to ensure effective policy implementation across these regions. Addressing the media, Mr. Abdulai stated the significant progress in collaboration with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in the region, hoping to have more of these collaborations in the coming years.
He explained that the media is an important stakeholder to the organization and has a pivotal role to play.
“This is the beginning of collaboration with GJA in the Upper East but it’s not going to be the end. We don’t see the media as a stakeholder that gets invited to come and cover events to go and report, but as stakeholders who have a role,” he said.
Mr. Abdulai, in his address, also shared advancements regarding the National Insurance Commission’s efforts to operationalize a fund supporting premium service subsidies for farmers and agribusiness participants in Ghana.
“Today we are very happy to announce that we’ve made a lot of progress with the National Insurance Commission in terms of designing and structuring to operationalize this fund that has been established by Ghana to provide premium service subsidies to farmers and those involved in agriculture and agribusiness,” he added.
