Earl International Group Gold Ghana Limited has confirmed a violent attack on their private security guards by illegal miners in their underground mine. The incident occurred on the night of July 11, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m. at Shaft 2 Level 3.
According to a press release from the company’s Public Relations Department, over 30 illegal miners invaded the mine area to steal blasted ore and mine from the stopes.
The company’s security guards were called to intervene and arrest the trespassers. However, the illegal miners, armed with harmful weapons, attacked an expatriate and the security guards, resulting in injuries to five guards.
Three of the illegal miners were apprehended during the altercation. The company mentioned that this incident is part of an ongoing challenge they face due to the activities of illegal miners within their concession.
The illegal miners have constructed unauthorized pits to access the underground area and have become increasingly bold in their attempts to steal ore, often entering the area immediately after blasts or hiding in cross-cuts and stopes before blasts.
Earl International Group Gold Ghana Limited expressed deep concern over the high level of risk and disruption caused by these illegal activities. The statement recalled a similar incident on June 26, 2024, where approximately 50 individuals were found hiding underground just before a scheduled blast, thanks to the vigilance of a blast man.
The company reiterated its commitment to engaging with stakeholders and regulators to mitigate the troubling situation and ensure the safety of its operations and personnel.
