Diana Sungnuma Nyuuri is working towards becoming the first female SRC president for the Dr. Hilla Limann Technical University (DHLTU) in Wa, Upper West Regional capital.
When she spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Equal Voices programme, Ms. Nyuuri explained that she became interested in leading the institution because she wants to cause positive change.
“I was inspired to run for the position of Student Representative Council president because I am deeply passionate about creating positive change within our university community. I believe that effective leadership is crucial in championing the needs and voices of students, and I saw an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to this goal.”
Ahead of her official declaration of intention, Ms. Nyuuri has been committed to serving in various roles on campus, thus honing her skills, which she said would be critical to her excelling as SRC president.
“Key experiences that have prepared me for this leadership role include serving on various committees and student organizations where I honed my teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. Additionally, my academic background in STEM has equipped me with analytical thinking and a systematic approach to addressing complex issues,” she said.
Ms. Nyuuri, a level 200 BTEC student in Procurement, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management, admitted that her decision to run for presidency in a male-dominated field would be a difficult one. She, however, stated that she is adequately prepared for the task ahead.
“As a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field, I bring a unique perspective that emphasizes the value of diversity and inclusivity. I believe that diversity enriches our decision-making processes and leads to more innovative solutions. My experiences navigating gender biases have only strengthened my resolve to advocate for gender equality and empower other women in STEM. Along my journey to this position, I have faced gender-related challenges such as implicit bias, stereotype threat, and lack of representation. I have overcome these challenges by staying true to my values, seeking support from allies, and advocating for myself and other women in similar situations.”
If elected as SRC President, Ms. Nyuuri said she would “ensure diverse voices are heard and represented in student governance. I plan to actively engage with different student groups, listen to their perspectives, and create opportunities for meaningful participation. Transparency, inclusivity, and open communication will be key principles guiding my approach to fostering diversity in decision-making processes.”
