Policy Consultant worried Ghana can’t meet PFJ 2.0 target for poultry by 2028

Agriculture Policy Consultant, Emmanuel Wullingdool, is worried that Ghana may not be able to meet self-sufficiency in poultry production by 2028, as is the target of Planting for Food and Jobs 2.0.

According to Mr. Wullingdool, the target of achieving 420,000 metric tons of poultry production by 2028 with an 11 percent surplus seems unlikely to materialize.

He explained that his opinion is in line with challenges faced by poultry farmers, which are not being properly addressed. “Why I think this target might not be achieved is that the poultry farmers have always raised so many concerns and those concerns have not been appropriately addressed up to date.”

He noted the persistent concerns over access to inputs such as soya beans and maize, essential for poultry feed, and the impact of imports on local poultry production, suggesting that these factors need urgent attention from the government.

Mr. Wullingdool emphasized that unless these fundamental issues are addressed, poultry farmers will continue to face obstacles in meeting production targets. He suggested that resolving these challenges and ensuring farmers have reliable access to necessary inputs could pave the way towards achieving the set goals of the initiative.

“If the government can address the problems and let farmers have access to their primary things which are soya beans and maize, they can be able to achieve this target,” he said.
