Sampson Tangombu Chiragia, the Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central constituency, expressed deep disappointment over the recent midyear budget review presented in Parliament by the Finance Minister.

He criticised the Minister’s address, stating that it fell short of being a comprehensive budgetary statement.

“The Minister yesterday did not read a budget. When you talk of a budget, you are talking about figures,” Mr. Tangombu asserted, highlighting his dissatisfaction with the lack of detailed financial breakdowns typically associated with budget presentations.

He emphasised the need for transparency regarding how taxpayer money has been utilised thus far in the fiscal year. “If it was a budget, he would have told us what they spent, how they used the money that we gave to them for the half year. We did not hear anything from that,” the MP lamented.

He criticised the Minister for not introducing any new policy initiatives in the mid-year budget review.

High inflation rates were also a significant point of contention for Mr. Tangombu, who expressed disappointment over the Minister’s silence on the matter. “I was highly disappointed because inflation is very high,” he emphasised, underscoring the urgency of addressing cost-of-living issues affecting ordinary Ghanaians.

Another notable expectation that went unmet, according to Tangombu, was the hope for the removal of the COVID levy now that the pandemic’s immediate threat has subsided.

He described the Finance Minister’s presentation as one lacking substance and failing to address critical economic challenges. “He said basically nothing,” Mr. Tangombu asserted.

He noted that the statement would be debated to ensure transparency and accountability in government fiscal policies. “We will debate the statement to make Ghanaians know that all that he said was lies.”
