Lawyer Beatrice Annan, deputy spokesperson for John Mahama’s campaign, said the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s key strategies for the upcoming election focus on employment opportunities for the youth, particularly the implementation of a 24-hour economy.
She emphasized that the NDC aims to tackle pressing issues such as national debt, pension access for retirees, and the affordability of basic necessities. She pointed out that Mahama’s campaign is centered around revitalizing the economy with a special focus on the youth, who are seen as pivotal to the party’s strategy.
“It is important that as a political party, like the NDC that seeks to govern, we need to do things differently. Because we’ve never been in a state where we could not pay our debts as a nation, where our older parents could not have access to their pension, where young people cannot even afford three square meals.” “Going into this election, the youth are at the heart of the campaign.”
The campaign, she said, proposes a 24-hour economy, inspired by successful models in developed regions like the United States and Dubai, where continuous operations are supported by a three-shift system. “It is important to say that, in many developed jurisdictions like the U.S., Dubai and other beautiful places that we would want to go to, the only reason their country is what it is is because they run a three-shift system.”
She explained that this approach would necessitate an increase in security personnel, infrastructure improvements, and transportation enhancements. “You cannot run a 24-hour economy with a three-shift system without proper security services. And so many people will have to be employed in the security services like the military, the police, the fire service and all those people. So that they would also be able to run a three-shift system like the industries are running. And I can tell you that it means that the security services population will have to be doubled.” “Transportation and infrastructure will be boosted,” she said.
She further stated that measures would be put in place to ensure that the government is compelled to undertake more comprehensive projects, rather than those aimed solely at winning votes.
She highlighted plans including the introduction of a national apprenticeship program, offering free training and start-up kits to young people interested in trades such as dressmaking and mechanics.
