The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga East Constituency, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has purchased 200 electricity poles to support the rural electrification project in the Zuarungu-Mossi and Gambibigo communities.

He stated that the initiative, aimed at connecting households without electricity to the national grid, is part of his efforts to ensure universal access to electricity in the constituency. The 200 poles, which cost the MP GH¢96,000, were purchased due to the Ministry of Energy’s reluctance to respond to his numerous requests for poles.

Of the 200 poles, 160 are allocated to the Zuarungu-Mossi community, while 40 are designated for the Gambibigo community.

During the handover of the poles to the contractor at Zuarungu-Mossi, Dr. Ayine explained that the poles would meet the contractor’s requirements to connect each household to electricity in the beneficiary areas.

According to Dr. Ayine, this intervention is expected to improve residents’ lives, enhance economic activities, and support the rural electrification project initiated under the National Democratic Congress administration, which has stalled under the current administration.

“Electricity is now a necessity, so providing electricity is a basic need that the government must address. You cannot have a country where the government does not connect communities to electricity. Electricity is not only for social functions but also for economic activities. Some people here need a grinding mill, which now requires electricity to operate.”

“If someone has a salon and needs electricity to power the machines used for hairdressing, they will need electricity. Economic activities in the area will improve as a result. As an MP, I understand the importance of providing people with water, electricity, health services, and education. This is part of my obligation to the people in this electoral area.”

He mentioned that the contractor is expected to start work immediately and complete it before the end of the year.

Dr. Ayine also dismissed claims that he is under pressure to deliver development to the constituency due to the parliamentary contest with the NPP parliamentary candidate, Matthew Silas Amoah. The Bolgatanga East lawyer described himself as the best-performing MP since 2012.

While the chiefs and the people of the community expressed gratitude for the MP’s efforts, the youth group in the Zuarungu-Mossi community, known as “No Light No Vote,” thanked the MP for his prompt intervention. However, they insisted that until all houses without electricity are connected, they will not abandon their campaign, according to Thomas Aarrga, spokesperson for the group.
