Andrew Atariwini, the Deputy Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, stated that merging some ministries could create a leaner, more efficient government and align with public sentiment on reducing bureaucratic overhead.

Addressing the broader political landscape, Mr. Atariwini acknowledged the deep-rooted politicization in Ghana’s local governance structures, including assembly elections and unit committees. He emphasized the need for a more mature political environment, advocating for a shift away from partisan practices that have historically influenced local governance. He noted that while reforming these aspects will be challenging, it is crucial for the advancement of the nation’s political maturity. “We need to mature quickly in our politics. Partisan politics, which paints every issue with a political color, will not help us.”

On the topic of constitutional review, Mr. Atariwini highlighted the NPP’s commitment to decentralization as a means to enhance good governance. He suggested that any constitutional amendments should focus on strengthening decentralization and improving the efficiency of governance structures. He also expressed confidence that the party’s flagbearer has a unique vision for this process, aiming to achieve greater governance effectiveness. “Anything that promotes decentralization is what we will pursue. These changes are intended to enhance good governance, and I believe he has his own vision for this,” he said.

Mr. Atariwini praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s contributions over the past eight years, commending his energy, commitment, and innovative approaches to policy-making. He emphasized that the flagbearer has been instrumental in introducing 33 critical policies that have significantly impacted public life. According to Mr. Atariwini, Dr. Bawumia’s leadership has been characterized by selflessness and a strong public image, with no substantial evidence of corruption tarnishing his reputation.

“We have seen Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over the past eight years. We know his energy, commitment, passion, and innovations. Despite attempts to tarnish his reputation, there is no substantial evidence of corruption. He has demonstrated that he values the role he plays and has engineered 33 critical policies that have become very significant in our public lives,” he said.

However, he expressed confidence that under Bawumia’s leadership, Ghana would experience transformative progress. He outlined a vision of advancing to the ‘next level’ of innovation, prosperity, job creation, and efficient governance. “Dr. Bawumia is committed to helping this country move from where we are to the next level—next level of innovation, next level of prosperity, next level of job creation, and next level of efficient and prudent management of the country,” he added.
