In a recent presentation to the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) urged political parties to actively promote road safety during the upcoming election campaign season.
Recognizing the critical influence political parties have over large segments of the public, the NRSA identified them as key stakeholders in ensuring the safety of road users before, during, and after the elections.
At the briefing, the NRSA outlined several roles that political parties can adopt to enhance road safety. One major recommendation was for political parties to use their campaign platforms to consistently advocate for road safety among their members and supporters. The NRSA believes this will significantly raise awareness and encourage safer road practices among the electorate.
Additionally, the NRSA called on political parties to implement strict guidelines for their campaign convoys. Given the often chaotic and risky nature of campaign convoys, the authority emphasized the need for strict adherence to road safety protocols to prevent accidents and protect lives.
The NRSA also recommended the appointment of dedicated road safety officers within each political party. These officers would be responsible for ensuring that all party activities adhere to road safety regulations, particularly during the high-pressure campaign season.
Lastly, the NRSA proposed that political parties consider implementing a carpooling system during campaigns. This initiative aims to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, thereby minimizing traffic congestion and the risk of accidents.
The NRSA’s approach is intended to reduce the incidence of road traffic accidents before, during, and after the electioneering process. The focus is on preserving lives and ensuring a peaceful electoral process. Political parties are expected to heed these recommendations as the campaign season approaches.
