In a effort to improve water adaptation strategies, Benedict Fosu Arthur, a project coordinator for the Green Africa Youth Organisation (GAYO), recently led a comprehensive training session in Bolgatanga for Climate Youth Leaders.

The initiative aimed to provide local stakeholders with the knowledge and tools needed to address pressing water management challenges in the region.

A key takeaway from the training was the importance of community participation in developing effective water adaptation strategies. Benedict Fosu Arthur stressed that involving local stakeholders from the beginning ensures that solutions are culturally relevant and widely accepted.

“For our initiatives to succeed, we must prioritize community involvement in every phase—planning, implementation, and evaluation,” he said.

The approach aligns with GAYO’s commitment to integrated water resource management, which intersects with agriculture, health, and biodiversity.

Participants discussed several challenges affecting water availability, including climate variability and inadequate infrastructure in rural areas. They raised concerns about limited funding for sustainable technologies and the need for training in the maintenance and operation of water systems.

To address these issues, attendees suggested forming partnerships with local governments and NGOs to improve infrastructure, developing low-cost solutions tailored to community needs, and training local technicians to ensure sustainability.

Mr. Fosu Arthur also emphasized the importance of building resilience through diversifying water sources and creating community backup plans for water scarcity. “These insights will be crucial in shaping our future initiatives,” he noted, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to project design that addresses multiple sectors beyond just water management.

Looking ahead, GAYO plans to incorporate the lessons learned from this training into its ongoing projects. Benedict recommended conducting follow-up workshops to reinforce the concepts discussed and facilitate knowledge sharing among participants. Regular check-ins and feedback loops will be vital for adapting and improving strategies based on real-time field experiences.

The knowledge gained from this training session is expected to enhance GAYO’s water adaptation initiatives, making a significant impact on the communities it serves. As Arthur aptly stated, “Together, we can build a sustainable future for our water resources and ensure the well-being of our communities.”
