The Managing Director of Kacstones Records, Wenawome Duriyem Aborah, has called on authorities to put the health and well-being of young people ahead of corporate profits as concerns grow over activities he says expose the youth to substance abuse.
“We cannot allow commercial interests to take precedence over the well-being of our young people,” Mr. Aborah said.
He was speaking at the launch of the 5th Upper East Regional Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards in Bolgatanga, where Kacstones Records was announced as one of the main sponsors.
Mr. Aborah expressed concern that some companies and influential individuals organise competitions and other activities that, in his view, indirectly promote products associated with substance abuse among young people.
He said existing restrictions on the promotion of such products must be enforced, arguing that commercial considerations should not override efforts to protect young people.
“Our people cannot become the price we pay for their corporate profits,” he stressed.
Mr. Aborah called on public institutions, traditional authorities, businesses and other stakeholders to work together to tackle substance abuse, particularly among young people in the Upper East Region.
He also challenged journalists to remain resolute in their work despite political, financial and other pressures that could compromise their professional integrity.
According to him, communities depend on journalists to investigate wrongdoing, raise concerns about issues affecting residents and hold institutions and individuals accountable.
Mr. Aborah further urged the media to devote greater attention to the Upper East Region’s tourism and cultural resources, which he said could contribute to local economic development if adequately promoted.
Kacstones Records and the Paga Youth Movement are the main sponsors of the 5th Upper East Regional GJA Awards, scheduled for October 2, 2026. The awards are being held under the theme, “Beyond the Headlines: The Media’s Role in Promoting WASH for Safe Motherhood and Quality Healthcare.”
