Hundreds of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters, on Tuesday, 17th September 2024 in the Upper East region, took to the streets of Bolgatanga in a massive demonstration dubbed “Enough is Enough”.
The peaceful protest, which is part of a nationwide activity, seeks to demand that the Electoral Commission address all abnormalities in the voter register to ensure a transparent December 7th, 2024 general election.
Clad in red and black attire, the protesters held placards with inscriptions such as “Voters are suffering,” “EC protect my vote,” “Peace starts with a credible register,” and “Jane Mensa is a danger to democracy,” among others. NDC party elders, former appointees, former Members of Parliament, current MPs, parliamentary candidates, former and current constituency and regional executives, and ordinary supporters took part.
The NDC Upper East regional secretary, Donatus Akamukre, who read the petition on behalf of the party leadership at the EC premises, said, “The integrity of Ghana’s electoral process is essential to the stability of its democracy. Given the numerous irregularities identified in the Provisional Voters Register – such as anomalies in voter registration and transfers, the loss of Biometric Voter Registration Kits, and other critical deficiencies – a comprehensive forensic audit is necessary to safeguard the credibility of the 2024 General Elections.”
“In the national interest, the NDC urges your esteemed office to permit a forensic audit of the voters register and its IT system as a vital step towards restoring public confidence, ensuring transparency, and upholding the democratic principles that are the cornerstone of our Republic.”
The Upper East Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Mumuni Bolnaba, together with other executives of the party, after presenting the petition to the EC Regional Director William Obeng Adarkwa, stated that as the December polls approach, the EC must prioritize transparency and accountability to maintain public trust and peace in the country.
The Electoral Commission (EC) Regional Director, William Obeng Adarkwa, who received the petition, assured the NDC that he would forward their concerns to the national level.
