The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has handed over two rehabilitated classroom blocks to the Ghana Education Service (GES) in two communities under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project.

The beneficiary schools include Zaare Preparatory Junior High School (JHS) and Soe Yipala Junior High School (JHS), both in Bolgatanga municipality.

At the Zaare Preparatory JHS, the assembly rehabilitated a 5-unit classroom block and supplied 175 wooden mono desks, 5 teachers’ tables, and chairs. Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Rex Asanga said it became necessary for the assembly to renovate these schools to ensure quality basic education in the municipality.

“At Zaare Preparatory, the school was not in the best shape. It was too low, and the pupils were suffering in it. So the community appealed, and we decided to remove the roofing, raise the structure, reroof it, and make it generally good, and also provide furniture,” he stated.

Similarly, Soe Yipala Junior High School benefited from the renovation of a 3-unit classroom block, accompanied by a supply of 105 wooden mono desks, 4 tables for teachers, and chairs.

Mr. Asanga said, “Here in Yipala, the community embarked on a project, but somewhere along the line, they couldn’t continue because of lack of finance. So under SOCO, we decided to come to their aid and completed it. I am impressed with the quality of work done so far. We also have teachers’ tables and chairs, students’ desks, and I am very impressed with the work.”

These upgrades aim to provide a conducive learning environment, increase access to quality education, and boost academic performance for students. At the Zaare Preparatory J.H.S, Catherine Assibi Nyaaba, the Headmistress of the school, could not hide her joy, describing the intervention of the Assembly as timely.

The Municipal Director of Education, Estella Kye-eboh, who received the keys to the schools and handed them over to the various head teachers, commended the assembly and SOCO for their efforts. She urged the management of the schools, the various communities, and the students to take good care of the facilities.

The rehabilitated classroom blocks and supplied furniture will have a positive impact on teaching and learning, ultimately benefiting the students and teachers of Zaare Preparatory School and Soe Yipala Junior High School. The MCE, Mr. Asanga, also stated that more educational facilities would be prioritized under SOCO phase II, which is about to take off in the coming weeks.
