Chiana-Pio, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, the Paramount Chief of the Chiana Traditional Area, has been re-elected as President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs.

In an election conducted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Pe Ayagitam secured 19 votes out of 29 valid votes, defeating his rival, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, the Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, who received 10 votes.

There were no rejected ballots.

In the same election, Naba Abisa Anonsona Anthony III, the Paramount Chief of Mirigu, was also re-elected as Vice President of the House. He garnered 17 votes, surpassing his opponent, Pe Ayikodie Zangwio Atoge IV, the Paramount Chief of the Katiu Traditional Area, who received 12 votes.

Additionally, Naba Kosom Yelzoya Asaga II, the Paramount Chief of Nangodi; Pe Asagpaare Aneakwoa Balinia Adda II, the Paramount Chief of Navrongo; and Naba Olando Ayamga Awuni II were elected alongside the President and Vice President as representatives of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs to the National House of Chiefs.

Speaking to the media after his victory, Chiana-Pio Pe Adiali Ayagitam III expressed gratitude for his re-election, stating that it was not surprising given his performance since first taking office in 2020. He mentioned the construction of a referral regional hospital, an airport, and the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam as some projects he would lead the House to lobby for on behalf of the Upper East Region.

Pe Ayagitam also vowed to intensify efforts to resolve the long-standing chieftaincy disputes in Bawku and Bolgatanga. “We are working hard to ensure there is peace and harmony in the region. The Bolgatanga case is in the hands of the National House of Chiefs, and I know that once there is a ruling, it will be the final solution to that problem. As for the Bawku issue, I predict it is coming to an end, and sooner rather than later, Bawku will know peace,” he stated.

As Ghana approaches the December 7 general elections, he called on the Electoral Commission to ensure a free and fair election and urged political parties and citizens to maintain peace during the process.
