Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) is set to make its mark at the national level in the 2024 Statistical-Data Hackathon, with three top teams emerging from the school-level competition.
These teams will represent BTU against six other technical universities, showcasing innovative solutions to real-world challenges. Under the theme “Unlocking Data Potential: Innovate for Impact,” the hackathon aims to harness the power of data-driven solutions.
Benjamin Apam (PhD), Focal Person of the Statistical-Data Hackathon, emphasized that the competition serves as a platform for collaboration, learning, and mentorship.
“As we assessed the work of these talented students earlier today, the judges selected the top three teams who will represent Bolgatanga Technical University at the national level. These teams will go on to compete against the other six technical universities, carrying with them the spirit of innovation and excellence they have demonstrated here.”
“It is important to note that this event is not just about competition; it is a platform for collaboration and learning where students have had the opportunity to engage deeply with the Ghana Statistical Service’s StatsBank, mentors, fellow students from different fields, as well as staff from the Ghana Statistical Service. Through this hackathon, our students have explored how integrated datasets can be leveraged to solve some of the most pressing challenges facing our nation and the world today.”
The Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, congratulated Bolgatanga Technical University for their participation and highlighted the importance of the hackathon competition for his organization and the nation as a whole.
“Indeed, it is very important to think about power in the context of data, knowing that we can use data from a power perspective to either misinform, disinform, or inform people. The gathering we are having here is important; we appreciate the entire value chain, which starts with the data available at the statistical online bank. What we are doing today is looking at how we can interrogate the data further through statistics and come up with policy directions.”
The Pro Vice Chancellor of Bolgatanga Technical University, Prof. Peter Osei Boamah, expressed gratitude on behalf of the university management to the Ghana Statistical Service and all partners for the initiative. He also urged students to take this opportunity seriously and explore it fully.
The leader of the winning ‘Team Golsa,’ Abotzabire Matthew Awinbe, expressed their readiness to compete and win against the technical universities at the national level.
