On Saturday, October 5, the Women in Broadcasting (WIB) association marked a significant milestone by successfully conducting their inaugural peace campaign in Tongo.

This event, held against the backdrop of heavy downpour, showcased the determination and resilience of women journalists committed to fostering peace and unity in their communities.

The day began with a formal visit to the Tongraan’s palace, where the WIB members were warmly welcomed and granted permission to proceed with their campaign. This crucial endorsement from local leadership underscored the importance of the initiative in promoting peace in the region.

Following the palace visit, the campaign kicked off on the streets of Tongo. Participants marched energetically, holding placards with inscriptions such as “Vote for peace, vote for progress,” “Peaceful elections for a brighter future,” “It’s about your ballot, not a bullet,” and “Political opponents are not enemies.” They made their way through the market, engaging the people and raising awareness about the importance of peace in political discourse. The procession culminated at the main station, where participants gathered to further discuss their mission and goals. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the spirit of the campaign remained unshaken.

During their visit to the palace, Tongraan Kugbilsong Nanlebegtang emphasized the importance of peace, noting that the region has historically been one of tranquility. He highlighted the critical role of education in fostering understanding and cooperation, particularly among female journalists, who have the ability to address conflicts and misunderstandings within the community.

“The political game is not a game for war; it is for the purpose of development. Educate the people. As journalists, especially women, if there is a misunderstanding somewhere, it is you who will settle it. I am very happy about this step that you have taken,” he said.

Looking ahead, the Women in Broadcasting association plans to extend their peace campaign to Bongo, eager to build on the momentum generated in Tongo. The initiative aims not only to spread awareness about peace ahead of the December polls but also to foster unity in the region.
