Bolgatanga Municipal Agriculture Department plans organic agroecology market

The Department of Food and Agriculture in the Bolgatanga Municipality is making plans to establish a specialized agroecology market, exclusively for the sale of organic food produce. This market will cater to the growing demand for organic vegetables and foodstuffs among consumers concerned about the use of chemical fertilizers in conventional farming.

Speaking exclusively to A1 Radio, Lantana Osman, the Bolgatanga Municipal Director of Agriculture, revealed that the department also intends to establish agroecology farms to supply the new market. She noted that the goal is to provide a healthier, eco-friendly alternative to meet the needs of consumers who prefer organic produce over chemically treated food items.

“We have people in the system that are looking for safe foods. Foods that don’t have chemicals because we all know the issues that we are facing nowadays. People don’t even like patronizing vegetables because of the perceived chemical content that we use. So, I will plead with our farmers to try as much as possible to ensure that the chemical usage is reduced so that we can complement it with organic chemicals,” she stated.

With this good initiative, Madam Lantana says the agroecology market that was planned for piloting this year is delayed due to lack of funds to roll it out. Despite the financial constraints, she is optimistic that the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project would support the initiative. Madam Lantana made these comments after presenting fertilizer to dry season farmers under the SOCO Project’s Local Economic Development (LED) activities.

The support, which includes seeds and two bags of fertilizer per farmer, is aimed at boosting agricultural yields and enhancing food security in the region.
