The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, has stressed the importance of promoting harmony in a political landscape often characterized by hostility, particularly in the northern part of the country. His remarks came during a visit by the Women in Broadcasting (WIB) group to his palace ahead of their peace campaign in Bongo township.

“In the first place, I welcome you to my palace and wish to take this opportunity to appreciate your efforts on this program. It is a very commendable initiative, given that politics here, especially in the northern part, is often associated with more enmity than friendship,” he stated.

He emphasized the need for education about the impact of political affiliations on familial relationships, noting that such divisions can lead to long-lasting enmity. He pointed out that many families fail to recognize that members can belong to different political parties without becoming enemies. This lack of understanding, he said, often results in unnecessary tension and conflict, particularly affecting women, who are the most vulnerable in these situations.

“Families do not realize that you can belong to the same family but be part of different political parties. People use this to hold grudges and become perpetual enemies. I think now is the right time to educate people and help them understand, especially as women, who are more vulnerable and often terrorized due to their political affiliations,” he remarked.

In addressing the WIB group, the chief urged the women to effectively deliver their message, underscoring the importance of their campaign in fostering understanding and cooperation within the community.

“I appreciate your efforts, and I hope the message you will convey will resonate well with the people,” he said.

He also highlighted that political violence is predominantly perpetuated by the youth, who may be manipulated into acts of aggression. Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum called on young people to exercise restraint during this election year, emphasizing the need for patience and peace.

“Political violence is mainly carried out by the youth. The elderly are not strong enough to go and fight; it is the youth who are used for such actions. Therefore, my advice to the youth is to exercise restraint during this electioneering period,” he advised.

With the elections approaching, the chief acknowledged the unique challenges this year presents, particularly as two northern candidates are vying for leadership.

“As we draw closer to the elections, I plead with everyone to campaign peacefully and exercise patience so that, in the end, we can achieve a peaceful election,” he added.

He expressed concern that any violence could tarnish the region’s reputation, urging the youth to prioritize peace and collaboration for a positive outcome.

“This year’s election presents a significant challenge, as two northern candidates are competing. The whole country is watching to see how we will conduct ourselves. If we resort to violence, it will bring negative attention and a bad name to our region. I pray that the youth will understand this and allow peace to reign both now and after the elections,” he concluded.
