Abigail Adumolga Tiwol, Gender and Child Protection Manager at Youth Harvest Foundation, emphasized the importance of caring for children regardless of one’s financial status. She highlighted that the future of any society hinges on the well-being and development of its children.

“When a child is brought into this world, it is crucial to ensure they grow completely and are able to develop their potential and become responsible citizens,” she said while speaking to Humul Khrusum Tahiru on the Equal Voices Programme.

She stressed the need for tailored parenting that considers a child’s age, advocating for a balanced upbringing that respects both gender equality and individual responsibilities. She called for a cultural shift that encourages open dialogue with both boys and girls about their rights and roles, promoting teamwork and mutual support.

“I think that going forward, we need to change the mindset in the way we do things. Of course, even as you socialize them that way, you should still let them know that there are distinct roles between the two, but there is nothing wrong if we all engage in teamwork.”

Addressing the challenges faced by girls, Madam Tiwol noted that excessive household responsibilities often hinder academic performance. She urged fathers to play a more active role in domestic duties, fostering an environment where boys and girls can equally contribute and thrive.

Furthermore, she inspired young people, especially girls, to recognize their potential and seize opportunities. She underscored the importance of having personal values and boundaries, encouraging girls to leverage available resources and support to reach their aspirations. “I always tell young people that they are capable of becoming anything they want to be in this world, as long as they make up their minds and set certain rules to guide their lives. They should have values and ensure that the values they set for themselves are respected, and that no one crosses those boundaries.”

“But if all this support is in place and you, the girl child, don’t come out of your shell and grab the opportunities that are available, nobody can force them into your life. So I think that girls should take advantage of the numerous support options out there to harness their potential, develop, and become whatever they aspire to be,” she added.
