The Department of Food and Agriculture in the Bolgatanga Municipality recognized nine outstanding farmers for their contributions to food security in Ghana at this year’s Farmers’ Day celebration.
Simon Apuko Adongo was awarded the overall Best Municipal Farmer. He received a tricycle (Motorking), a cutlass, a pair of Wellington boots, a piece of GTP cloth, a knapsack sprayer, a bar of Key soap, and a certificate.
The First Runner-Up for Municipal Best Farmer went to Mbanky Gifty. She received a motorbike, a cutlass, a pair of Wellington boots, a piece of GTP cloth, a knapsack sprayer, a bar of Key soap, and a certificate.
The Municipal Best Female Farmer award went to Awia Abeleyine, who received a fridge, four cutlasses, a knapsack sprayer, a pair of Wellington boots, a piece of GTP cloth, two bags of NPK fertilizer (Falcon), 2 kg of Kynock fertilizer, a manual sheller, a bar of Key soap, a raincoat, and a certificate.
Speaking to the media, Simon Apuko Adongo urged all farmers to stay committed and work closely with agricultural officials for better cultivation and growth. “I started farming nearly 30 years ago, and I have received awards in 2021 and 2022. Today, as the overall Municipal Best Farmer, I am grateful and excited. I also encourage all farmers to be serious about their work and to collaborate closely with agricultural staff, which will lead to improvements.”
Mbanky Gifty, the First Runner-Up and a professional teacher and farmer, expressed excitement about her recognition and encouraged more people, especially women and youth, to venture into farming.
Other awardees included Issahaku Ayamga (Municipal Best Crops Farmer), Ayisha Mohammed (Municipal Best Livestock Farmer), Atoya Adombila (Best Physically Challenged Farmer), Agnes Apambila (Municipal Best Conservation Agriculture Farmer), Adingyele Adolebiringe (Best Sheanut Picker), and Alazoe Courage (Municipal Best Agric Extension Agent).
The 40th Farmers’ Day celebration, held under the theme “Building a Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” saw the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Rex Asanga, applauding the awardees and highlighting the government’s commitment to improving the agricultural sector.
In her welcome address, the Municipal Director of Agriculture, Lantana Osman, appreciated the efforts of the farmers and encouraged them to continue their hard work in the coming years.
