Women in Broadcasting (WiB) has recently concluded its third peace campaign in Bolgatanga, advocating for non-violence and unity as the country prepares for upcoming elections.

The campaign began at Jubilee Park and saw participants march through the streets to the main station, then into the local market, before returning to the park. Holding placards with inscriptions such as “Ballots and Bullets” and “Together for Peace”, the group engaged with the public, emphasizing the importance of peaceful elections and cautioning against the dangers of hate speech and political polarization.

The campaign particularly focused on raising awareness among women and youth about the risks associated with election violence. Speaking to the media, the Vice President of WiB, Josephine Akaribo, highlighted the need for individuals to make informed decisions. She urged citizens to refrain from engaging in violent acts or promoting harmful rhetoric driven by political loyalty.

“What we are saying is that you can choose, but not through violence. Most people are ignorant of the things they do, and sometimes they don’t take the harmful effects into consideration when they get involved in certain activities,” Madam Akaribo stated.

She expressed concerns about the lack of awareness regarding the consequences of violent political actions, stressing that reckless behavior during political rallies often leads to harm. Innocent community members, including the elderly, are disproportionately affected during such conflicts. “When there’s conflict in Bolga, innocent people trying to go about their daily business will not be able to continue as normal,” she added.

Market women in Bolgatanga expressed their support for the campaign, though many shared their disillusionment with the electoral process, citing personal losses due to election-related violence. Despite these concerns, Madam Akaribo expressed optimism. “As we went around, we engaged with many youth in the market. If this number of young people takes our message seriously, we believe it can have a meaningful impact.”

This campaign formed part of a broader initiative by A1 Radio in collaboration with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA). Under the initiative titled “Countering Hate Speech and Polarising Narratives to Foster Democratic Consolidation and Peace in Ghana,” the project aims to strengthen the electoral process by promoting tolerance and responsible information sharing.

The initiative seeks to educate the public on the importance of peaceful political discourse, counter divisive narratives, and foster inclusive dialogue, particularly during election periods.

Through the peace campaign and other discussions facilitated by A1 Radio, the project has helped demystify electoral processes and address anxieties among the public, assuring citizens that their votes will count and that the process will remain transparent.

These engagements also encourage collaboration among political actors, fostering mutual respect and tolerance.

The campaign was funded by the Media Foundation for West Africa as part of its efforts to consolidate Ghana’s democracy and ensure a peaceful electoral environment.
