Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Ghana organized a football match between security personnel and youth in Paga, Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region, under the Prevention of Violent Extremism through Social Accountability (POVESTA) Project II.

The match, which brought together various security personnel and local youth, followed a stakeholder dialogue on the project’s implementation in the district. Funded by the Dutch government and implemented in collaboration with the National Peace Council, the POVESTA Project aims to promote peaceful coexistence between communities and security services.

The youth of Paga emerged victorious, defeating the combined security team with a score of 3-1. In her closing remarks, Adelaide Yiriyelleh, Manager of the POVESTA Project at CRS Ghana, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative and highlighted its significance in fostering harmony.

“This football match between the security services and the Paga youth aims at fostering peaceful coexistence between the two groups,” she said. “We hope that beyond this match, such initiatives will continue to sustain peace within the community.”

The POVESTA Project, which began in October 2022, is currently in its second phase and covers five regions: Upper East, Upper West, North East, Northern, and Greater Accra. Spanning 13 districts, the project is set to run until 2026.

Deputy Superintendent of Immigration Robert Ubindam, Head of Operations at the Paga Immigration Office, also commended the initiative. He emphasized that such activities contribute significantly to strengthening peaceful coexistence between security personnel and civilians.

“These activities are essential for the district as they help security agencies execute their duties more effectively,” said DSI Ubindam.

This match not only strengthened bonds between security personnel and the community but also reinforced the role of sports in peacebuilding and social accountability.
