PWALUGU: MTN Ghana Foundation Supports Community with ICT Centre

MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned a 20 seater ICT Centre of learning for students and people of Pwalugu community in the Talensi District of the upper east region.

The project forms part of the MTN ICT centres of learning project being implemented in partnership with UNDP Ghana, with the aim of making ICT accessible and closer to the inaccessible and deprived communities across the ten regions.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Friday, the executive secretary of MTN Ghana Foundation Robert Kuzoe said information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become a necessity in managing information and knowledge in a fast changing world, as a result of its importance ICT has been integrated into the educational system to enable children adopt an ICT ready lifestyle. Although many children study ICT, children in deprived communities are often left out due to lack of resources.

“It is our hope that the community will adopt a good maintenance culture to preserve the facility for future generations to benefit from it,” he said.

He stated that MTN Ghana Foundation reached a strategic agreement with UNDP to develop the MTN ICT learning Centres Project throughout the country. The 10 ICT centres are to be furnished with 220 desk top computers, 10 laptops, 10 projectors, 10 colour printers, 10 photocopiers, 10 scanners, digital cameras and furniture in all the 10 regions of Ghana.

Mr. Kuzoe disclosed that since the establishment of the Foundation eight years ago, MTN has invested over GH₵ 22.5 million in 135 community development projects in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment and the projects are estimated to have impacted over three million people across the country.

The Chief of Pwalugu and other community opinion leaders were full of appreciation to MTN Ghana Foundation and UNDP for taking steps to accelerate the learning and usage of ICT in the rural communities by establishing ICT centres across the ten regions. They believe the huge opportunity will go a long way in improving the teaching and learning of ICT in their schools.

The Chief and people of Pawlugu also assured the MTN Ghana Foundation that the people of Pwalugu and its surrounding communities will show maximum commitment to patronize the facility to ensure its sustainability to improve ICT learning for their future generation.
