The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), William Nlanjebor Jalulah, has underscored the media’s pivotal role in ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
He also emphasized that the media’s responsibility to inform the public accurately transcends election 2024.
“Whether it’s election season or not, we are supposed to inform the public in a professional manner. However, when significant events like the upcoming election occur, you raise your standards and control the narrative. Basically, the media has been doing well,” Mr. Jalulah stated.
Speaking on the Equal Voices programme on A1 Radio, Mr. Jalulah noted that while the media consistently strives to provide timely and professional information, elections demand even greater attention to detail. He expressed confidence in the media’s ability to rise to the occasion and maintain high standards of professionalism throughout the electoral period.
Mr. Jalulah also highlighted the importance of responsible reporting, urging journalists to be mindful of their language, tone, and choice of words when engaging with the public. “The role we have to play is to ensure that we are professional in whatever we do and mindful of what we propagate,” he stressed.
He called on media houses to prioritize truth and accuracy, ensuring that the information they disseminate helps the public make informed decisions. Mr. Jalulah reminded media practitioners to protect the credibility of their institutions by avoiding the spread of falsehoods and negativity. He urged journalists to consider the long-term impact of their work, emphasizing the need to maintain a positive image even beyond the elections.
“As we go out, let’s keep in mind that our media houses’ reputations are at stake. We should strive to provide the best possible information and build trust even after the elections because we have an image to protect. Let’s not become conduits for falsehoods and negativity,” he cautioned.
This discussion was part of a collaborative effort between the station and the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA). The project, titled Countering Hate Speech and Polarizing Narratives to Foster Democratic Consolidation and Peace in Ghana, aims to strengthen the electoral process by promoting tolerance and responsible information sharing.
The initiative seeks to educate the public on the importance of peaceful political discourse, counter divisive and toxic narratives, and foster inclusive dialogue, particularly during the election period. It contributes to the broader goal of consolidating Ghana’s democracy and ensuring a peaceful electoral environment.
