Abel Ndego, the Acting Regional Head of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Upper East Region, has stressed the importance of consumer vigilance when purchasing food products to avoid potential health risks.
He urged consumers to check product date markings to ensure they are within the product’s shelf life. According to him, the FDA mandates that all products display this information clearly, and any product without visible date markings should raise immediate concern. “It’s imperative for consumers to check date markings on every product they purchase to ensure the product is still within its shelf life. As part of labeling requirements, the FDA ensures that this information is provided. If, for any reason, a product lacks date markings, it becomes a reason for concern,” he explained.
Mr. Ndego also emphasized the significance of proper labeling. He warned that products with labels entirely in foreign languages might not have FDA approval. Regulations require that English be included on all product labels, alongside any other relevant languages. If this requirement is not met, consumers should question the product’s legitimacy. “If you purchase a product with labeling entirely in a foreign language, it is indicative that the product most likely has not been approved by the FDA,” he cautioned.
Additionally, Mr. Ndego highlighted the role of packaging in determining product safety. He advised consumers to inspect packaging carefully and avoid products in dented cans, as such damage could compromise the contents’ integrity and safety.
Mr. Ndego shared these insights during an interview on A1 Radio, reiterating the FDA’s commitment to ensuring public health and safety during the festive season.
