Peter Akudugu Ayamba, National President of the Ghana Physician Assistants Association (GPAA), has called for structural reforms in the healthcare system to address the professional limitations faced by Physician Assistants (PAs).
Speaking on the evolving landscape of PA training during an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Ayamba highlighted the stark differences between past and present training dynamics and career aspirations.
“In the past, PA training attracted older individuals nearing retirement. Career progression was less of a priority, as many were content with their roles,” he explained. “Today, younger professionals dominate the field, with decades ahead in their careers. However, the system lacks avenues for specialization, stifling their growth.”
Mr. Ayamba emphasized the limited opportunities for PAs to advance into specialist roles in fields such as dermatology, psychiatry, or public health. “I’ve reached the highest grade in my profession, but there’s no pathway for further advancement. This is a significant weakness in our healthcare system,” he lamented.
He further criticized the absence of deliberate national efforts to expand the scope of practice for Physician Assistants, noting that their current contributions at the community level often require innovative approaches that go beyond textbook practices.
“We are forced to adapt to the realities on the ground, but without opportunities to improve our skills, these innovations risk being dismissed as ‘jungle nursing,’” he remarked.
Mr. Ayamba urged policymakers to create opportunities for continuous education and specialization for Physician Assistants.
“If PAs are allowed to expand their scope and enhance their expertise, the entire healthcare system will benefit. It’s time to prioritize their professional development,” he concluded.
His plea resonates with many in the healthcare sector, drawing attention to the need for systemic reforms to empower PAs and improve the quality of care they provide to communities across Ghana.
