A cargo truck loaded with food stuff and headed to Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo region from Burkina Faso on Monday morning capsized into a broken bridge on the Namoo-Bongo road in the upper east region.

Eyewitnesses say the driver and his mate narrowly escaped death in the nearly fatal accident involving the track which was carting over 102 bags of rice and groundnuts.

The bridge which links some communities in the area is at the verge of collapse due to current torrential rains in the region.  The bridge links Bongo, Balungo and Namoo communities and is one of the major roads that generates revenue for the Bongo district assembly.

Some community members who spoke to A1 news accused the assembly of turning a deaf ear to calls for the bridge to be repaired.

New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate of Bongo constituency, Gabriel Agana Ade Nsoh who toured the area over the weekend to ascertain the situation alleged that 7 people have died on the road because of its deplorable state.

“Seven people have died so far on that road with one person wounded. The district assembly, the DCE is quite aware because the police have got records of this.”

Mr. Agana therefore called on Authorities to come to the aid of the community members by constructing the bridge to avoid future road crashes.

District Chief Executive of the area, Alexis Adugdaa in an interview said maintenance of the road is beyond the capacity of the district assembly. According to him, the regional coordinating council and the feeder roads department have taken it up to fix the road adding that “If we put together our one year common fund without doing any other thing we cannot work on that road.”

Still in the Bongo district, Gorigo dam which serves as a major source of drinking water for animals and farming purpose for the people of Gorigo and surrounding communities has been washed off following the heavy downpour. Farmlands closer to the dam have also been submerged.

A1 radio checks can confirm that the youth of Bongo will soon hit the streets if Authorities fail to put back in good shape the Namoo-Bongo road and the Gorigo dam.
