In a bid to better address the distinct needs of youth and sports, President John Mahama has restructured the Ministry of Youth and Sports, dividing it into two entities: the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment, and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
This reorganization aims to provide a more focused approach to youth issues, independent of the sports sector.
Speaking on A1 Radio about the restructuring, Humul Khrusum Tahiru celebrated football executive and journalist, expressed strong support for the decision, emphasizing the vital role of recreation in the newly created Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
She highlighted the importance of recreational activities as complementary to sports, promoting physical fitness, leisure, and social engagement. Tahiru suggested that integrating recreational facilities into sports venues could enhance the overall experience for families, enabling parents to enjoy games while their children partake in fun activities.
“There’s an aspect of our lives that we have actually left out, which is recreation. Recreation comes with some form of sports,” she explained. “We are looking at people making time for leisure, improving physical fitness, and enjoying fun and social involvement. So, adding recreation to sports makes a lot of sense to me.”
Tahiru also underscored the importance of infrastructure development in achieving the dual goals of sports and recreation. She noted that well-planned infrastructure could enhance the appeal of sports events and attract larger audiences.
“I think it’s going to give us an opportunity to focus on making our infrastructure the best. For instance, if you’re building a stadium, you should consider including recreational facilities,” she stated.
She further emphasized that prioritizing infrastructure development is essential for the success of the new ministry. “If we want to have an efficient Ministry of Sports and Recreation, then infrastructure development in this country must be one of the key things we focus on,” Tahiru said.
Tahiru urged the government to allocate adequate attention and resources to the development of sports and recreational facilities, believing it to be crucial for the ministry’s success. “I’m hoping they’ll give equal attention to these things,” she concluded.
