Dr. Nicholas Naani Zangina, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications team in the Upper East Region, has expressed strong support for Hon. Donatus Akamugre following his nomination as Regional Minister.
He praised Mr. Akamugre for his extensive experience in Ghana’s political landscape, noting that his deep understanding of grassroots issues, traditional authorities, and legal and constitutional bodies makes his nomination timely and fitting.
“He is thorough. He has a rich, in-depth experience when it comes to the political landscape of Ghana. I wasn’t surprised when his nomination came, and it was timely. When you are looking for people to man the helm of affairs, be it political or otherwise, you look for people with rich and in-depth knowledge,” Dr. Zangina said.
He added, “As far as the grassroots are concerned, he’s in touch with them. As far as traditional authorities are concerned, he’s in touch with them. When it comes to regulatory, legal, and constitutional bodies, he’s also well-versed.”
Speaking during an interview on A1 Radio, Dr. Zangina described Hon. Akamugre as a committed and experienced leader, referring to him as the “political Mugabe” of the region due to his nearly 30 years as the NDC’s Regional Secretary. He emphasized that such dedication to the political process makes the nominee an ideal candidate for the role.
“I will say he is the political Mugabe of the region because if you have somebody being the Regional Secretary for close to 30 good years, it tells you how committed he is. These are the kinds of people we should be putting at the helm of affairs.”
Expressing confidence in Hon. Akamugre’s leadership, Dr. Zangina urged the NDC rank and file, as well as grassroots supporters, to be patient and allow the new Regional Minister time to settle into his role and address their expectations. He believes Hon. Akamugre’s ability to work across political lines will foster unity and development in the region.
“I can only wish him well and hope and pray that the rank and file of the NDC, and the grassroots, will give him time to settle in, hit the ground running, and be patient with him in terms of our demands and expectations. Above all, I hope they will accord him cordiality,” he said.
Dr. Zangina outlined key priorities for Hon. Akamugre, particularly improving education, road infrastructure, and support for the informal economy. He stressed the importance of enhancing educational infrastructure, efficiency, and human resource development, while also investing in roads and creating jobs to reduce unemployment in the region.
“I want to see him improving educational infrastructure, efficiency in the delivery of education, and retooling and redeveloping human resources in the educational sector,” Dr. Zangina said. “Aside from that, road infrastructure will be one area I want him to concentrate some of his energies on. The third will be the informal economy because, like it or not, people must survive.”
Dr. Zangina expressed confidence that the Regional Minister-designate would bring the necessary energy and dedication to address these critical areas. “I have confidence that he’ll deliver,” he concluded.
