The South-West Circuit of the Bolgatanga Municipality has kicked off its interschool sports competition at the Zamse Senior High Technical School Park. The event, running from Monday, January 20, to Friday, January 24, 2025, brings together six junior high schools and five primary schools from across the circuit to compete in soccer, athletics, handball, and volleyball.

Participating schools include Ayuusi Yine Junior High School, Aningazanga Junior High School, Kalbeo/Tindonsobligo Junior High School, Baptist Junior High School, Adabase Junior High School, and SDA Junior High School. The primary schools competing are Ayuusi Yine Primary, Kalbeo/Tindonsobligo Primary, Tindayamga Primary, Baptist Primary, and SDA Primary.

As the competition heats up, expectations are high. Ayuusi Yine Primary School’s headmistress, Ayishetu Shirazu, expressed confidence in her school’s chances, particularly highlighting the strong performance of the girls’ team in soccer and their involvement in athletics.

She emphasized the importance of supporting female sports and recognizing the potential of girls in athletics and soccer.

“My expectation is that Ayuusi Yine Square (Primary and JHS) will win to represent the circuit and, if possible, the national level,” she said. “So far, Ayuusi Yine boys have been down, and the girls have won. I’m inspired that we ladies are going to show the way in soccer because female soccer is not well recognized. As an activist, I am anticipating that we are pushing all our girls to be actively involved in athletics and soccer so that, one day, their potential will be recognized. Even if it’s not my school, I think the girl child should excel and do well for us. We don’t want the girl child to be left behind. The women should win, and that’s my expectation.”

Meanwhile, Salifu Mohammed Bashiru, a teacher from Baptist Primary School, shared his hopes for better results this year, thanks to the extended competition schedule. Despite their girls’ team losing on penalties, the boys’ team triumphed against Ayuusi Yine, and they are aiming for the finals.

“We have high expectations. Last year, we didn’t do that well. We had only two days for the competition, so it was a knockout game. But this year, we have a whole week, which gives us more time. We expect to get to the finals this year,” he said.

Pupils from the competing schools also voiced their expectations. Victor Akanbombire, a sports enthusiast from Baptist Primary, expressed his determination to win. “My expectation is that we can beat each school, and, in the end, we’ll be the winners.”

Similarly, Barnabas Azubila, a pupil from Ayuusi Yine JHS, analyzed their loss to Baptist, attributing it to a mismatch in team selection. “They didn’t put in those who could play. It was the small children they put in, and they didn’t have the strength or skill to play the ball well,” he explained.

Despite the setback, Barnabas remains hopeful that his school can either repeat last year’s second-place finish or secure the top spot. “In any match our school plays, I expect us to win. Last year, we placed second. This year, I’m hoping for first or at least second. But in my mind, I’m not sure we’ll get second again because the team is not playing well.”

As the week progresses, the excitement and fierce competition are set to continue, with schools vying for victory and showcasing their talents on a larger stage. The question on everyone’s mind remains: “Which school will come out victorious?”
