Renowned Kologo legend Atongo Zimba has expressed disappointment over the lack of investment and understanding of the music business in Northern Ghana, particularly in the Upper East Region.
Speaking on the Buuri Malema Show, a flagship program on Bolga FM hosted by Moses Apiah, Atongo voiced his concerns about the untapped potential of the region’s music industry.
“We are still lacking knowledge of the music business, and that is sad,” he lamented. “In this region, people, especially business owners, are more focused on building hotels and pubs rather than investing in music. Why would a foreigner come to Bolgatanga or the Northern Region, pick talents like Stevoo, Wiyaala, and others, and invest in them? It’s because they see the potential and know how much they can make. Yet, our own people fail to recognize this.”
Atongo described the music industry in the Northern sector as “gold” that people are sitting on without realizing its value. He criticized business-minded individuals for their reluctance to invest in musicians, pointing out that their priorities are misaligned with the region’s artistic potential.
Adding to his critique, the music icon highlighted the negativity that plagues local musicians. “It’s even sadder that these same people prefer to speak ill of their brothers and sisters in the music industry without understanding the business.”
Atongo Zimba’s candid remarks underscore the need for a mindset shift among the region’s business community to harness the rich musical talent in Northern Ghana and turn it into a thriving, profitable industry.
