Akufo-Addo’s ‘sins’ affected Bawumia – Former Bolga Central NPP Women’s Organizer

Madam Linda Akupa, a former Women’s Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, has attributed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s loss in the 2024 general elections to what she describes as the “sins” of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Dr. Bawumia, who served as Vice President and was the NPP’s presidential candidate, secured only 41% of the total valid votes, losing decisively to John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 56%.

Speaking on the ‘Zina Yela’ program on Bolga FM, Madam Akupa noted that while the NPP government achieved some successes during its eight years in office, the leadership of former President Akufo-Addo and certain appointees left Ghanaians disillusioned, which ultimately affected Dr. Bawumia’s chances.

Madam Akupa criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for failing to address the concerns of Ghanaians, even when members of the party raised alarms. She referenced the public outcry, including calls from some NPP Members of Parliament, for the removal of then Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta over allegations of economic mismanagement.

“Many people called on the President to take decisive action to improve the lives of Ghanaians. These calls included the removal of the Finance Minister. Even we, as party members, made such calls, but nobody listened to us. At the time, Ghanaians were complaining about the rising cost of living, and the President’s inability to listen to these concerns deeply affected the party’s image,” she said.

Madam Akupa emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, despite being a strong candidate with high hopes of becoming Ghana’s next president, suffered because the electorate transferred their frustrations with the Akufo-Addo administration to him.

“There were places where, during campaigning, people would tell us they would have voted for our candidates but couldn’t because of the President. This clearly showed that many voters had issues with the President, not with Dr. Bawumia or our parliamentary candidates. Unfortunately, this even led to some party members deciding not to come out and vote,” she remarked.

She acknowledged the government’s achievements in certain areas but noted that these accomplishments were overshadowed by the failures and unresolved grievances during Akufo-Addo’s tenure.
