Over 400,000 unemployed Ghanaian youth have applied for recruitment into modules of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

Out of this number only 100,000 applicants will be considered and at most additional 10,000 applicants shall be considered into any of the 8 modules of the agency.

The faith of the unlucky applicants shall be taken into consideration by the agency in the area of capacity building.

“We have a plan for them and what we are doing now is we are coming out with modules that will provide them capacities so that they can compete in other areas. So we are currently developing online resource center. The idea is that occasionally business advisory services will come from region to region and give them support” Deputy Chief Executive Officer of YEA in-charge of operations, Luke A. Atazona disclosed.

Mr. Atazona made this revelation in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region during a media briefing to highlight the achievements of the agency and the way to go.

According to him, about 8,000 beneficiaries have been deployed in the security services such as the Ghana police service, the prison sector and the fire service to support in the protection of lives and property. 2,500 successful applicants who were taken through series of training will soon be deployed to the health sector to help provide health delivery at the door step of the public while 20,000 successful applicants will also be trained and deployed to assist in the educational sector.

The YEA deputy CEO noted that the selection of individuals into the modules is based on competence without prejudice and discrimination against persons belonging to a particular tribe, religion or political party.

“We are operating in a decentralized system in that all these young people are not staying in Accra or Kumasi or Bolgatanga. They are going as far as Bongo, they are going as far as Tongo, they are going as far as Akachie. The idea is that each community must benefit from His Excellency the president’s vision for young people.”

Corporate institutions including Bank of Africa are partnering the agency in executing its mandate of providing jobs and skills training to meet the job market. The then GYEEDA suffered financial leakages with some individuals standing trial for willfully causing financial loss to the state. As part of efforts to block unforeseen leakages Mr. Atazona disclosed that the agency has developed a cashless system of paying beneficiaries.

Responding to concerns from beneficiaries of the defunct GYEEDA over their exit fund, Upper East Regional Director of the agency, Roger Alolibisa said management of the agency has taken management of the provident fund to court over the delay in payment. Mr. Alolibisa assured past beneficiaries of the agency of getting monies due them when the court finally settles the case.
