The Upper East Region recorded a notable decline in road traffic crash incidents in 2024, with reported cases dropping by 11.23% compared to 2023.

However, the year also witnessed increases in fatalities and injuries, highlighting persistent road safety challenges.

A total of 127 crashes involving 209 vehicles were reported, resulting in 63 fatalities and 85 injuries.

While pedestrian knockdowns decreased significantly by 34.62%, fatalities rose by 4.62%, and injuries increased by 22.52%.

Motorcycles were the leading contributors to fatalities (61.8%), followed by commercial vehicles (23.5%) and private vehicles (14.7%).

Speaking on A1 Radio, the regional PRO, John Quashie, noted that non-compliance with road safety regulations—such as helmet use, speeding, and substance abuse—remains a significant factor in the high fatality rates.

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), in collaboration with stakeholders, is set to implement motorcycle safety measures to address the alarming trends.

Proposed measures include stricter enforcement of helmet use and speed limits, as well as educational campaigns on road safety.

The statistics also reveal that motorcycles accounted for 48.3% of the vehicles involved in crashes, followed by private vehicles (19.6%) and commercial vehicles (34.3%). Pedestrian fatalities increased by 133.3%, rising from three in 2023 to seven in 2024.

While the reduction in reported crashes and pedestrian knockdowns is commendable, the rise in fatalities and injuries underscores the need for intensified road safety interventions to protect vulnerable road users.
