A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Upper East Regional Communication Team, Dr. Nicolas Zangina, has called for calm among the party’s grassroots supporters protesting the appointment of Kwesi Sarpong as Acting Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as Acting Director General of the National Communications Authority, and Maame Ama Pratt as a staffer at the Vice President’s office.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Dr. Zangina emphasized that the President must be allowed to appoint individuals who align with his broader governance vision.
“Even our constitution advocates for inclusive governance. Yes, you come from a political party, but once you assume the reins of the country, you are expected to be fair to all people and bring the nation under one umbrella,” he stated.
He cited past instances, such as the appointment of Freddy Blay by the erstwhile John Kufuor government despite his affiliation with the Convention People’s Party (CPP). He also noted that the NDC itself had previously appointed individuals with strong technical and academic backgrounds to help constitute a government and run the affairs of the state.
Dr. Zangina, however, acknowledged the legitimacy of the concerns raised by party supporters, stating, “In the case of political parties, you would expect that those called to serve and reap the benefits of governance would be individuals who have toiled, sweated, and contributed their efforts toward the party’s victory.”
He further explained, “When you look at it from that angle, you may agree with the protests. But from a governance perspective, you can also look beyond party lines and select individuals with technical expertise, experience, and integrity.”
Dr. Zangina encouraged party faithful to trust the President’s ability to make decisions that will benefit both the party and the country.
